The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

They may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

— translated from Rumi

This poem speaks to me often as an individual and as a human in relationships. I have had many guests in my house, some that I have wanted to chase away. I have instead learned to sit with them, to wonder, to question, to learn from them, and to feel them.

I look forward to being invited to your guest house, to become acquainted with the other guests you have staying with you for brief or extended visits. I am honored to sit with you as some guests feel noticed, heard, honored and are free to leave. I am honored to sit with you as we learn to welcome some guests with curiosity, to ask and explore, “Why (now)” or “What do they need”?

I have extensive personal and professional experience with BIPOC populations, multi-racial individuals and families, and youth who are system involved (including legal, foster, adoption, unhoused, etc.), as a partner, mama, nana, learner, advocate, artist, educator, and nurse. I have a passion for nurturing relationships and engagement, focusing on racial and cultural equity, and finding joy in making a difference each day. I am excited to grow with you, in my practices centering individuals and communities.
